What is GalaxyViewer?
GalaxyViewer is an open source, cross-platform viewer for Second Life⢠and OpenSim Next Generation Core (NGC) grids, currently in development. It aims to provide a modern, flexible experience that works well on both desktop and mobile devices, inspired by viewers like Radegast and Lumiya.
What platforms are supported?
GalaxyViewer will support Windows, Linux, and Android platforms. Web browser support via WebAssembly is being explored but may be limited by hosting costs.
What programming languages and libraries are used?
GalaxyViewer is written in C# using .NET, with AvaloniaUI for the cross-platform interface and LibreMetaverse for the Second Life/OpenSim protocol implementation.
When will it be released?
GalaxyViewer is currently in early development. We don't have a release date yet, but we'll announce when we're ready for beta testing along with installation instructions. Follow our progress on GitHub and social media for updates.
Will it be free and open source?
Yes, GalaxyViewer will always be free and open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License. The source code is available on GitHub.
Can I use it for text chat only?
Yes! GalaxyViewer is designed with flexible use cases in mind. You can use it as a text-only client, and the 3D world view is completely optional.
Will there be 3D and VR support?
The initial release will focus on 2D mode with text chat and basic functionality. 3D world view will be added in a subsequent release, and VR support will be implemented after that.
Will it support voice chat?
Yes, GalaxyViewer will support voice chat using WebRTC technology. Voice chat will be optional.
Will it support OpenSim?
Yes, GalaxyViewer will support OpenSim, but only grids running the Next Generation Core (NGC) fork.
